TOP TIPS for designing a good brochure

  • Know your message – Define your objectives clearly, and from your clients point of view. Say what your business is about and what you can do for your customers.
  • Put your readers first – Keep your end purpose in mind. Is this brochure a give away at an exhibition? Will it be mailed in response to website enquiries? When your readers open your brochure, what will it say to them? Is it for a sales follow-up? Is it for an event?
  • Have a Wow! of a cover – Keep your design uncluttered. Make sure that your customer understands what you do just by looking at the cover.
  • Keep your concepts clear and simple Think of simple statements that get your message across – don't try to be too clever! Refine your message, and keep it understandable. Simple can be incredibly effective and doesn't have to be boring!
  • Limit your fonts – You don't need lots of fonts when you're thinking of how to design a brochure – just a heading, subheading, and body font. Choose a font that is easy to read. Talk to our designer about what fonts fit in with your company logo or corporate identity
  • Use headlines to draw attention
  • Try different paper stocks – Think about what your brochure is going to be used for – a giveaway, or something that you want your customer to keep. Want something fancy? Solid? Cheap? Glossy or matt? Solid colours and photos can hold better on different paper weights and finish. Mix and match paper – use thicker stock for covers, or an inside spread.
  • Print to a unique size – Don't be constrained by conventional paper sizes – try square, concertina, landscape, multi-panel.
  • Use sharp images – If you don't have professional photographs, have a look at one of the many stock image websites. A picture that looks great on a mobile phone will not print well in a brochure – the resolution for screen is much lower than for print.
  • Proof read your content – Check your spelling and check again!
  • Have a call to action – Have a call to action. For example, contact us by phone, email, website etc. Give your reader a motivation to respond. It is often a good idea to have your contact details on every page, so that it is simple for your customer to act instantly without having to hunt for your phone number or email address. Include all your social media platforms. Have a QR code for instant access to your website.
